How to Run VIDA 2014D from a Portable Windows To Go Drive (2025 Guide)

If you want a flexible solution that lets you run VIDA 2014D on multiple computers—or keep your main PC clean—setting up VIDA on a portable Windows To Go drive is a great option.

This guide explains how to do it and the best hardware to use for reliable performance.

Why Use a Portable Setup?

A Windows To Go drive lets you:

  • Carry your VIDA 2014D setup anywhere
  • Avoid installing diagnostic software directly on your main PC
  • Easily switch between different computers without reinstalling anything

Recommended Hardware

For the best results, use:

  • A solid-state drive (SSD) with at least 128GB capacity (256GB recommended)
  • A reliable SATA to USB 3.0 adapter or caddy, or
  • A portable M.2 SSD with USB 3.0 or USB 3.1/3.2 caddy

Important:
Do not use basic USB flash drives. They are far too slow and unreliable for running a full Windows environment with diagnostic software like VIDA 2014D.

USB 3.0 or better is essential for acceptable speed and performance.

Creating the Windows To Go Drive

To set up your portable Windows drive:

  1. Use a tool like Rufus (recommended) to create a Windows To Go installation on your SSD.
  2. Choose Windows 10 version 1809 or newer or Windows 11.
  3. Boot into the Windows To Go drive and complete the initial Windows setup.
  4. Install any Windows updates and adjust settings as desired.
  5. Download and run my VIDA 2014D installer on the portable drive.

Important:
There are many online guides available for creating and setting up Windows To Go drives. Because each user’s hardware and BIOS setup may vary, I cannot provide technical support for creating or booting into the Windows To Go drive itself. Please consult online resources for those steps.

However, once you are booted into your Windows To Go environment, I can provide support for my VIDA installer and the VIDA software itself—even when running from a portable setup.

Using VIDA 2014D from the Portable Drive

Once setup is complete:

  • Plug the drive into any compatible PC.
  • Boot from the portable drive (you may need to adjust your BIOS/UEFI settings).
  • Log in to VIDA using the standard login numbers for your region.
  • Connect your diagnostic device and begin working with the vehicle as usual.

Final Thoughts

A portable VIDA 2014D setup is a great way to keep your main PC clutter-free while maintaining full diagnostic capability anywhere you go. By using a high-quality SSD and USB 3.0 or better connection, you can enjoy speed and stability comparable to a normal Windows installation.
